From Friday to Saturday, Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the paramilitary group Wagner, launched a rebellion against Russia.
On Saturday morning, Wagner’s soldiers and tanks began to take control of several cities, starting with Rostov, the center of the Russian army’s operations. Before returning at the end of the day and putting an end to this rebellion.
If this operation took place, it was because Evguéni Prigojine had a specific goal in mind. According to information from Wall Street JournalWagner’s leader wanted to capture senior Russian security officials.
Western officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the newspaper that two of Wagner’s targets were Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov. These two Russian officers traveled to the south of the country.
This information reached the ears of Russian security forces. Shoigu and Gerasimov changed their plans and changed their movements.
Prigozhin would therefore have changed his ambitions and decided to invest the headquarters of the Russian army in Rostov before moving on to Moscow.
Prigozhin believes that Shoigu and Gerasimov are incompetent and responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of soldiers during the war in Ukraine.
Viktor Zolotov, head of the Russian National Guard, responded to the uprising on Tuesday. He believes it was produced and inspired by Western intelligence services. A cousin of Vladimir Putin also said the Russians “knew weeks before it started”.
