Onana signs a contract with Manchester United, and plans to travel to the United States on Thursday

Andre Onana has signed his contract with Manchester United and has been booked on a flight to join his new team-mates in New York on Thursday.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper was in Carrington on Wednesday completing medicals and finishing paperwork on his €55m transfer from Inter Milan. It now only remains for the clubs to sign the final papers on Thursday to complete the deal.

United have worked through the required visa process for the Cameroon international and are due to officially announce his arrival within the next 24 hours.

Onana will join Erik ten Hag’s squad, already in New York, once in the US and could play some part in Saturday’s friendly against Arsenal, fitness permitting.

Why Onana could be a perfect fit

Onana is a player Ten Hag knows well. He was a key player for Ajax under the Dutchman and is well versed in the coach’s style.

The Cameroonian international has exceptional passing range, confidence with the ball at his feet, controls the penalty area very well and is a highly regarded goalkeeper.

These skills were demonstrated during Inter’s run to the last Champions League final, where they lost 1-0 to Manchester City. Even in defeat, the 27-year-old showed his ability as a world-class goalkeeper.

While City were the team everyone expected to dominate in possession and smash the opposition through their keeper’s ability on the ball, it was actually Inter who caused the most problems thanks to Onana’s bravery in building from the back.
