A surprising video has been doing the rounds on social media for a few days now. At the end, hundreds of sheep roam a farm in northern China. Very strange behavior, especially when animals walk in the same direction for ten days, forming an almost perfect circle.
China’s state-run People’s Daily, which first shared the video, said the sheep were perfectly healthy and that such behavior was inexplicable. The farmer, the owner of 34 sheep sheds, explained that only 13ᵉ sheep were affected by the phenomenon. At first only a few sheep start walking in a circle, before the whole flock joins them.
On social networks, some tried to explain the behavior of animals. This has led to the hypothesis of a bacterial disease called listeriosis, sometimes nicknamed the disease of circles. The latter usually affects ruminants. The virus inflames a side of the brain that explains the animal’s circular movements. However, this track seems unlikely, because in normal times the death of animals usually occurs within 24 to 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. The mystery is complete…
