At least ten people were killed and more than a dozen seriously injured when a bus fell into a ditch on a road in the Andes in Peru on Saturday, local authorities announced.

The morning accident occurred when a bus carrying about 50 passengers from the Andean town of Vilcashuaman to Lima overturned 200 meters away in the Andean region of Huancavelica in the southeast of the country.

“A bus left the road and fell into a ditch, killing at least ten people,” the state-run Andina news agency reported. Police and firemen arrived and recovered the bodies of the dead, including children.

“Firefighters and police are carrying out rescue operations,” Alvino Rojas, head of the Huaytará health center, told state broadcaster TVPeru. The seriously injured were shifted to Pisco.
