Andre Praugher’s cause of death has been revealed to be lung cancer, his representative has confirmed Hollywood Reporter.
Prager died on Monday at the age of 61 after what his representative said was a “brief illness.”
He starred as lead detective Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC Homicide: Life on the Street For the first six seasons of the popular show, he then played another cop, Captain Raymond Holt — this time against type and for laughs — on the 2013-2021 Fox-NBC sitcom. Brooklyn nine nine.
He won his first Emmy Award in 1998 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series the kill After a season that featured one of its most memorable episodes, “Subway.” It was a two-player in which Pembleton tries to discover whether a man (Vincent D’Onofrio) stuck between a Baltimore subway train and the platform was pushed onto the track — while also trying to comfort him in his dying moments.
He won his second Emmy Award for the 2006 FX series thief.
Braugher has been cast as the leading man in Shonda Rhimes’ murder mystery series on Netflix and has already completed filming several of his scenes. It’s not clear what series showrunner Paul William Davies is about (scandal), he will do so after his death.
In the wake of his death, tributes from former co-stars and industry creatives have poured in for Braugher, with many praising his iconic roles and success as a talented Black character actor. Heartfelt words were posted on social media platforms including messages from Terry Crews, David Simon, Chelsea Peretti, Joel McKinnon Miller, Dirk Blocker, Reed Diamond, Mike Royce and Josh Lucas.
