War in Ukraine: Ukrainian attack in Crimea causes “explosion of an ammunition depot”

It comes five days after an attack on Crimea’s only bridge to Russia.

Saturday’s attack also caused a slight disruption to road traffic on the Crimean bridge, although it was quickly restored, pro-Russian officials said in a telegram. Train traffic has stopped.

Crimea has been targeted throughout Russia’s offensive in Ukraine, but attacks have escalated in recent weeks.

“As a result of an attack by enemy drones in the Krasnokhvardeisky district, an explosion occurred at an ammunition depot,” Governor Sergei Aksyonov said in a telegram.

“A decision has been taken to evacuate people living within a radius of five kilometers. It has also been decided to stop train services to minimize the risks,” he added.

The governor did not specify the affected location, indicating that Krasnokhvardesky district is located inland in the center of the Black Sea peninsula.

In recent weeks, Kyiv has launched a counteroffensive, saying it wants to retake Crimea to regain land lost to Moscow.

Speaking remotely at the Aspen Security Forum (USA) on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ruled that the Russian Crimean bridge “must be neutralized”. According to him, the work launched by President Vladimir Putin in 2018 “provides ammunition for the Crimean peninsula”.

Kiev considers the bridge, built in violation of international law, an “enemy object”.
