March 17, 2023 This press release has been updated to include the states to which Aldi has sold Simply Nature Organic Frozen Strawberries.
Scenic Fruit Company in Gresham, Oregon Recalls frozen organic strawberries sold to Costco, Aldi, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafood, PCC Community Markets and frozen organic tropical blend sold to Trader Joe’s due to hepatitis A outbreaks.
Hepatitis A is an infectious liver disease caused by exposure to the hepatitis A virus, including from food. It can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious illness lasting several months. In rare cases, hepatitis A infection can progress to liver failure, especially in consumers who have had a previous severe illness or are immunocompromised.
Illness occurs within 15 to 50 days of exposure and includes fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine, and pale stools. Hepatitis A vaccination can prevent the disease if it is given within two weeks of exposure to contaminated food. Persons who may have consumed the infected product should consult a healthcare professional or local health department to determine if vaccination is appropriate, and consumers who develop symptoms of hepatitis A should contact their healthcare professional or local health department immediately.

Although hepatitis A was not detected on this product, out of an abundance of caution, consumers should stop consuming the product and return it to their local store for a refund. The company has stopped producing and distributing the product as the FDA is still investigating the cause of the problem.
