The village in question is called Giethoorn. It is located in the northeast of the Netherlands. In a ranking drawn up by Travel + Leisure, Keithrun ranks third among the most beautiful villages in the world behind Cortes in France and Shirakawago in Japan. The place is notable for its hand-dug canals, 176 bridges connecting the small island to the mainland, hiking and cycling trails, but also its thatched-roof houses dating back to the 18th century. More than a million tourists visit Giethorn every year, where residents do not travel by car, but by foot, boat or bicycle.
Green spaces and museums
A journey to Keythorn invites us to reconnect with nature. The place is surrounded by lush greenery like the Werriben-Wieden National Park, which is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. You can easily find a small corner of greenery to take a picnic or relax with family, friends or alone. Solo travel is one of the major travel trends of the moment.
Beyond its nature and its canals, Keythorne is worth a visit for its museums and galleries. How to get there?
To reach Keethoorn, count on 3 hours by road or a little more if the traffic is a bit heavy. Nothing stops you from making a short stopover in Antwerp or Utrecht, another Dutch destination full of charm. If you prefer to travel by train, the journey takes less than 6 hours.
