Ryan Day receives contract extension to 2028 with salary increase to $9.5 million annually

Ryan Day has a new contract.

Under the terms of the new contract approved by the Ohio State Talent, Compensation and Governance Commission on Wednesday, Day will receive annual compensation of $9.5 million annually with a two-year contract extension through the 2028 season.

The new contract, which is subject to full board approval on Thursday, links Day with Michigan State’s Mel Tucker, who was awarded a 10-year, $95 million contract in November, for the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten. Nationally, Day ties with Tucker and LSU’s Brian Kelly for the third-highest-paid coaches behind USC Lincoln Riley ($10 million) and Nick Saban of Alabama ($9.9 million).

Day’s new contract increases his compensation for the 2022 season by $1.9 million, as he was set to make $7.6 million this year under terms his previous contract.

With Dai’s new contract, Ohio State will now pay a total of $18.283 million to Dai and his 10 assistant coaches this year An increase of more than $4 million over 2021.

Day, who is entering his fourth season as a head coach for Ohio State, is one of five Ohio State coaches to receive a contract extension this week along with Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmanwho gets a contract extension that pays him $3.5 million annually until the 2027-28 season.

Ohio State women’s basketball coach Kevin McGough receives a new four-year contract that will pay him $1.05 million annually. Nick Myers, men’s lacrosse coach, signs a five-year contract that runs through the 2027 season, while men’s hockey coach Steve Rolick gets a two-year contract that runs through the 2025-26 season.
