ATLANTA – Atlanta Braves back defensive player Ronald Akuna Jr.. From the injury list Thursday, more than a week before the team’s target date for his return from knee surgery.
Acuna is expected to hit the lead Thursday night against the Chicago Cubs. He may initially divide the time between the correct field and the particular hitter.
The Braves, the world champion, struggled early in the season and is still looking for their first win in the series after splitting the first two games of their three-game series with the Cubs.
The Braves will be looking for Akuna to provide a boost to their squad after he showed in his rehab period with Triple-A Gwinnett that he has recovered from the surgery that ended the 2021 season.
Acuna was 2-5 for Gwinnett on Wednesday night and hit 368 with three stolen bases in six games.
Despite Akuna’s solid performance in the rehab quest, the Braves seemed resolute in their plan to stay cautious ahead of his expected return on May 6.
However, there were some indications that Akuna had an influence on that plan. Head coach Brian Sneeker said on Wednesday that the team will wait until after Akuna’s nine scheduled rounds with Gwinnett on Thursday night before making a decision on their next game.
The reason behind Braves’ decision to activate Acuna could have been a loss Eddie Rosario For eight to 12 weeks. Rosario, the best player in last season’s Champions League, underwent a laser operation on Wednesday to correct blurred vision and swelling in his right eye.
Brave designated defensive player Alex Dickerson Set to clear a place for Acuna in the active list.
