Philadelphia is relocating a bus stop for Megabus, Greyhound and other transit companies in order to address safety concerns and crowding issues on SEPTA bus routes, officials announced Wednesday.
Starting Thursday, November 16, the current bus stop located on the sidewalk at 6th Street and Market Street will move to the corner of Spring Garden Avenue and Christopher Columbus Boulevard.
Bus carriers affected by the change include FlixBus, Greyhound, Coach USA/Megabus and Peter Pan.
Peter Pan, FlixBus and Greyhound will operate on the south platform of Spring Garden Street and on both sides of Front Street while Megabus will operate on Spring Garden Street on the north platform under the I-95 bridge adjacent to the Spring Garden Station exit for the Market. SEPTA initially announced in August that its buses would skip the station at 6y And market streets to avoid congestion problems.
“The volume and nature of the complaints make the situation at 6th Street and Market Street completely untenable,” said Mike Carroll, deputy director general of the Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability (OTIS). “The Kenney Administration is particularly concerned about the close concentration of important federal entities, their employees, and people involved in critical activities. For this reason, the City has made a firm commitment to moving intercity bus operations from the 600 block of Market Street this fall. Efforts are underway to find a location remote street but requires more time, and a temporary change in location is needed urgently.
Officials also said existing parking lots along Noble Street between Front Street and Christopher Columbus Boulevard may be vacated to provide more space for bus loading while the bike lane on the east side of Spring Garden will be diverted. City officials also said they are coordinating with bus companies to make space available for customer service, including issuing tickets in loading zones.
