The Spanish tax administration regularly publishes a ranking of the richest cities with at least 1,000 inhabitants based on tax declarations. The village of San Lorenzo de la Barilla, with 1,066 inhabitants, ranked 2038 in 2020. But in 2021, it suddenly ranked 77th, with Cuenca province taking first place.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, this is due to a person who declared an income of more than 10 million euros. “Only one taxpayer changed the statistics and increased the average. The city’s economy had nothing to do with this decision,” said Mayor Virginia Martinez.
