FedEx Field – The Leaders' collapse came to a head Sunday, as they were blown out at home by the Cowboys 38-10 to finish the season 4-13 and with eight straight losses.
The good news?
As a result of their shortcomings, Washington will be rewarded with the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Expect big changes in Washington ahead of the draft. Head coach Ron Rivera could be fired at any moment and is certainly not expected to last another week in the position.
Since Rivera was the leader of the leaders' process (the coach-centric approach was a mistake), there would likely have been a complete sweep of the front office and coaching staff. It may not happen as quickly as Rivera's ouster, but it will likely still happen.
As for the players on the field, some of them are under long-term contracts, but they expect the roster to turn around, and this includes the midfielder. Sam Howell became the first Washington QB to start every game in a season since Kirk Cousins in 2017, but unfortunately, Howell regressed significantly to end the year. He has thrown at least one interception in the last seven games and multiple picks in the last three.
The excitement surrounding the sale of the franchise last summer has now become a reality. The 2023 leaders are in place with Dan Snyder at the helm. Harris didn't take over until a week before training camp. Time has not allowed his group to make their mark on this season.
This is changing now. Harris, a D.C. native who watched his team get blown away at home in a stadium packed with Cowboys fans, patiently watched and watched for 17 games. It's time to act.
The only thing that can be sold now in Washington is hope. High picks usually mean two rookie quarterbacks, and at No. 2 Washington will have a lot of strong options.
New coach. New structure. New midfielder.
