John Wick died in chapter 4? Sequel, Spinoffs Coming to Keanu Reeves – Variety

Brake alert: Spoilers ahead for “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which is now in theaters.

After killing countless High Table minions, falling hundreds of stairs and dueling a blind master swordsman, John Wick Keanu Reeves… is dead?

“John Wick: Chapter 4” ends with Wick seemingly six feet tall, having died from three gunshot wounds sustained during his final duel with Caine (Donnie Yen). Winston (Ian McShane) and Bury King (Laurence Fishburne) even pay their respects at the master killer’s tombstone, which lies next to his wife’s final burial place.

Before his death, Wake finally freed himself from the clutches of the High Table. Instead of firing the third and final shot in his duel against Cain, Wick sticks round and shoots Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård), who walks in to deliver the final blow to Wick before checking to see if he’s out. of lead. With de Gramont dead, Wake obtained his freedom, but did not enjoy it before dying peacefully on the steps of the Sacré-Cur in France as the sun began to rise.

But is Wick really dead? We don’t actually see him die from his wounds, nor do we see his body buried. After all, more than four movies have survived an inhumane amount of stabbing, gunshots, branding, hard falls from ridiculous heights, and other grievous bodily harm. At the end of “John Wick 3,” he faked his death from the ruler of the High Table (Asia Kate Dillon) and recovered from his wounds with the Bowery King underground, hiding until the beginning of “John Wick 4.” His death has been orchestrated before, so why not again?

In August 2020, Lionsgate CEO John Weltheimer revealed that a John Wick 5 was already in the works, before filming of John Wick 4 began. The original plan was for the fourth and fifth entries to shoot back-to-back, which ultimately didn’t happen. Last week, director Chad Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter, “In our minds, Keanu and I are done with this moment. We’re going to give John Wick a break. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone likes it and it gets weird, we’ll take a quiet minute.”

“The thought process was, when we had the chance after ‘Chapter 3,’ what is the ‘why’?” Reeves said in a post-screening Q&A session at the SXSW Film Festival. “When Chad and I were talking about it, the ‘why’ was death, and John Wick was dead. For him to somehow get his safety or his freedom, that was the reason the movie was made. You have to have a ‘why’.”

Even if the main “John Wick” movie hasn’t been shown for a while, Reeves is already booked to appear in the upcoming spin-off “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas. Set between the third and fourth John Wick films, “Ballerina” stars De Armas as a killer named Ronnie who hunts down the killers of her family. We’ve previously seen a young Rooney in “John Wick 3,” where she played ballerina Unity Phelan and was under the tutelage of principal Anjelica Huston. Huston’s character is the leader of the Ruska Roma crime syndicate, of which Wick was a member. The group also includes Katya (Natalia Tena), who welcomes Wick back into the adoptive family and tags him with her catchphrase in “John Wick 4.”

“Ballerina”, whose release date has not yet been determined, could open the mysterious world of “John Wick”. In addition to Reeves, the cast includes Huston, McShane, and newcomers Gabriel Byrne, Norman Reedus, and Catalina Sandino Moreno. Lance Reddick will also appear as Continental Concierge Sharon, in his last filmed appearance before his death last week. Riddick’s character is shot to death by the Marquis de Gramont at the beginning of “John Wick 4”.

The “John Wick” franchise is also an upcoming prequel series that will feature the origins of The Continental and many of its key players. Heading to Peacock in the future, “The Continental” will take place in the 1970s and reveal how a young Winston took control of the killer’s hotel and safe haven. Colin Woodell plays the young Winston, Iomide Adigun is Charon, Katie McGrath is the Governor and Peter Green is Uncle Charlie, who secretly goes to dispose of the dead bodies in the “John Wick” movies. Mel Gibson plays a character named Cormac, and the cast includes several other newcomers playing a variety of guests and killers from Continental.

“John Wick 4” also has a future finale theme in its plot set in a post-credits scene with Akira (Rina Sawayama) and Caine. Earlier in the film, Ken kills Akira’s father Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), who was Wake’s friend and manager of the Osaka Continental Hotel. Akira, who was the hotel’s concierge, approaches Ken in a post-credits scene to avenge her father’s death, possibly sparking the upcoming confrontation.
