Yakutsk is a Russian city located in Siberia and it has been more than 20 years since the temperature this week has been this low.
According to CNN, two days before this new record, the city had already seen the mercury drop below -50 degrees. Temperatures recorded in the region are particularly low and are 20 degrees below average for January, which is considered the coldest of the year in Yakutsk (-40 degrees).

If people are used to feeling sub-zero temperatures for a good part of the year, they should be extra careful to face the cold that the current temperature may prove dangerous to their health. “You can’t fight. Either you adapt and dress accordingly, or you will suffer,” a resident of the town explained to Siberian media, wearing two scarves and layers of gloves, hats and hoods.
