First reactions to ‘Blue Beetle’ praise DC Studios’ latest blockbuster – varied

The first reactions to DC Studios’ Blue Beetle, starring Xolo Maridueña, began with early viewers calling the movie “a big surprise.” While some of the reactions sway with parts that feel shaky or play things a little silly, for the most part they praise the film’s action, heart, and certain points of Latino culture.

The film, which hits theaters August 18, follows teenager Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) and his encounter with a strange munition that attaches to his body, giving the teen extraordinary powers. Blue Beetle, in particular, is one of the notable Latino superheroes in comic book history. The majority of the cast of “Blue Beetle” are Latino, including Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Raoul Trujillo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcazar, and Belissa Escobedo, along with Susan Sarandon.

“Charm City Kings” director Angel Manuel Soto directed “Blue Beetle” from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnett-Alcocer. The DC Comics movie was originally slated as an HBO Max original, along with the now-shelved “Batigrl” movie. Warner Bros. chose Switching to a theatrical release of the feature before James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-executives of DC Studios.

The film marks the penultimate release of DC Studios’ current system, with the upcoming “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” marking the final installment before rebooting the comic book universe’s continuity with Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” in 2025. However, Maridueña and Soto has spoken candidly about hopes for the hero’s future on screen under the new regime.
