I amTurkish resistance is no wonder. First-time candidate Kemal Klisadaroglu, who united the anti-Erdogan opposition behind him and forced the Turkish president into a runoff, finally lost on Sunday.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who won 52% of the vote according to partial results released late in the evening, begins a new term and third decade in power. Meanwhile, Kemal Klisadaroglu improved his first lap score by three points and finished the race on 48%, according to the same section results.
The task was difficult. To win, Recep Tayyip Erdogan needs to mobilize 264,000 additional voters between the two rounds, ten times less than his rival. The head of state sought partial votes from Turks who voted in the first round for ultranationalist Sinan Ogun, who finished third with 5.2% on May 14.
