E-commerce giant Amazon said Monday it will invest up to $4 billion in artificial intelligence company Anthropic and take a minority ownership in the company.

This move highlights Amazon’s strong push into artificial intelligence, as it looks to keep up with competitors such as Microsoft and Alphabet’s Google.

Founded about two years ago by former OpenAI executives, Anthropic recently launched its new chatbot called Claude 2.

The two companies said on Monday that they are forming a strategic collaboration to advance generative artificial intelligence, with the startup choosing Amazon Web Services as its primary cloud provider. Anthropic said it will provide AWS customers with early access to unique model customization features and fine-tuning capabilities.

Anthropic will also use semiconductors specifically designed by AWS to train the underlying models that power its AI applications.

Basic models are large AI programs that are trained on massive amounts of data so that they can be adapted to solve a wide range of tasks.
