A Delta Air Lines plane crashed shortly after takeoff from New York on Friday, and pilots who felt shaking in the plane returned to land safely at JFK Airport.
Delta said that after takeoff, the pilots received an alert about an emergency skid on the right side of the plane and heard an unusual sound coming from that area of the Boeing 767, which is listed as having been manufactured in 1990. The pilots declared an emergency so the flight could be quickly redirected to the airport, and the plane landed and headed to its own powered gate, according to the airline.
There were 176 passengers, two pilots and five flight attendants on board the plane, which was scheduled to head to Los Angeles. Delta said it put the passengers on another plane bound for California.
Delta said the plane had been taken out of service for evaluation, and that it was cooperating with investigators and supporting efforts to find the chip.
“Since there is nothing more important than the safety of our customers and people, Delta Air Crews have undertaken extensive training and followed procedures to return to JFK,” the airline said in a statement.
