NASCAR Phoenix live scores, updates and highlights from the United Rentals Work United 500

Things can get tough when the NASCAR Cup Series comes to Phoenix Racetrack.

Bright sunlight, high trail temperatures, polluted air—all can make the one-mile trail difficult to traverse. While not as famous for its wrecks as the Daytona or Talladega, “The Desert Oddball” has had its fair share of dust.

Whether it was Jeff Gordon’s wreck that knocked Clint Bowyer out of the 2012 Chase or Denny Hamlin’s spill that devoured competitors Kurt Busch and Chase Elliott in 2019, Phoenix has had its moments of madness.

Perhaps Sunday will provide even more mayhem when the racers take part in the United Rentals Work United 500. It’s a great race for more reasons than one: It also gives drivers a preview of what’s to come in November’s Cup Series championship race.

Kevin Harvick has enjoyed unprecedented success in Phoenix, and although the veteran has yet to start in early 2023, he should be considered among the favorites for this date.

4:29 PM: Green flag returns to Phoenix. Larson stole the rally on Byron, passing him on pit road. He’s back on top.

4:18 PM: Byron takes the first stage. This is his fourth successive victory. It’s burning at the moment.

4:14 PM: Logano is in a dangerous position to bring in Byron. The Cup Series champ needs to stay ahead of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to ensure he gets the free pass going into Stage 2.

4:13 PM: Eric Jones and Ty Gibbs are looking to cut into contention over stage point with 10 laps to go. The two battle for ring position in the fourteenth and fifteenth places.

4:05 pm: Clear air for Byron up front, who led all but one lap despite starting the race behind Larson. Number 24 will be broken early.

4:00 pm: For those with a Harvick watch: Car #4 sits in 13th place, 13 seconds off Byron’s pace. Approaching the midpoint of the first stage.

3:54 PM: Joey Logano has already gotten roped into Martin Truex Jr. not just once, but twice. I can’t imagine Truex would be too happy with the #22 car’s behavior so early on.

3:49 PM: William Byron roars past Larson to take the lead within the first two laps.

3:48 PM: Green flag wave at Phoenix Raceway. Kyle Larson leads the group to get things started.

3:39 PM: The engines started here in Phoenix. It should be a convincing race.

3:15 pm: Zane Smith headed to the rear after having a power steering problem earlier in the day.

3:05 pm: It will be a packed house today at Phoenix Raceway.
