What to remember from Macron’s speech

As we waited for him to finally speak, it was from the US capital that the French president broke the silence. But not to talk about his letter to the French or to discuss the future government. Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to Ukraine in front of its NATO partners.

Military and economic support

He emphasized that French support, which included substantial military and economic aid, played a key role in helping Ukraine resist Russia. Macron pledged that France would continue this support as long as necessary, stressing the importance of decisions taken in Washington to strengthen this long-term commitment and promote Ukraine’s membership in NATO.

Emmanuel Macron criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s visits to Russia and China, saying he had “no mandate” from the European Union and was only involved in Hungary. “It was his will and he did it sovereignly, but he did not do us any favors by his visit because he did not inform us in any way beforehand and did not receive any mandate,” he said.

“Nice try”

Emmanuel Macron was very gracious when asked about his US counterpart’s gaffes. “We all make slips of the tongue,” he said.

Our colleagues from Le Monde and LCI tried to get the president to comment on the current political crisis in France. Emmanuel Macron kindly but firmly made it clear that it was a good effort, but that he would not answer domestic political questions from abroad. Just like that, it was resolved.
