LRussian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the reorganization of the Russian military on Tuesday. It’s part of a troop reinforcement the Kremlin is looking for.

Sergei Shoigu explained at a meeting of his ministry that only structural changes within the armed forces can ensure Russia’s security.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced shortly before the start of the new year that he would increase the number of soldiers, from 1.15 to 1.5 million men.

According to Sergei Shoigu, two large regional units – one in Moscow, the other in St. Petersburg – will be created by merging different branches of the armed forces. Independent military units will also be established in Ukrainian territories annexed by Russia.

The minister also announced the creation of a military force in the Republic of Karelia in Russia’s north in response to Sweden and Finland’s planned accession to NATO.
