War in Ukraine: A thread of events for this Wednesday, April 5, 2023

This Wednesday is travel day for the Ukrainian President, the French President and the President of the European Commission and Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Journeys with different challenges.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Poland on Wednesday, a key Ukraine ally that has played a key role in encouraging Western military and political support for Kiev since the start of the Russian invasion.

There, the Ukrainian president was decorated with the Order of the White Eagle for deepening relations between Poland and Ukraine and for his struggle and perseverance in the defense of human rights. Meanwhile, the Polish president Andrzej Duda said Warsaw would ask for additional security guarantees for Ukraine at the next NATO summit in Vilnius this summer.

French President Emmanuel Macron is also making an important trip this Wednesday. He arrived in China with European Commission President Ursula van der Leyen, aiming to “restore” relations with one of Europe’s key economic partners, wanting to address sensitive issues such as Ukraine.

During the first speech of his trip, delivered to the French community in China, he declared that Beijing could play a “key role” in the Ukrainian conflict and that it had “no interest” in providing arms to Russia.

Meanwhile, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director Rafael Croci visited Russia on Wednesday for talks aimed at securing the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which has come under repeated fire.
