“All the old evils that modern Russia brings back will be defeated just as Nazism was defeated,” Zelensky said in a speech posted on his social media shortly after another large-scale Russian attack on the capital, Kyiv. Thirty kamikaze drones were shot down over the capital.
“Just as we destroyed evil together then, we destroy the same evil together now,” he continued. And add: “This evil, although different today, has the same goal: enslavement or destruction”.
The speech comes during May 8 world celebrations and is seen as a boost to Russian patriotic sentiment ahead of a major military parade in Moscow, which Vladimir Putin will take part in.
“We will win!”
“We will win!” Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated in this recorded speech in front of the World War II memorial complex overlooking the Dnieper River in Kiev.
“We will never forget the contribution of the Ukrainian people to the victory over Nazism,” said Mr. Zelensky insisted. “We will not allow anyone to lie that this war could have been won without the contribution of another country or people,” he said.
Mr. Zelensky charged again.
“We will not lose what we have won, we will recover everything captured by the enemy”, he further promises in this ten-minute speech.
Apart from annexed Crimea, Ukraine says it is finalizing preparations for a major offensive to recapture Russian-occupied territories in the east and south.
In recent days, drone attacks on the Ukrainian and Russian sides have intensified, a sign of the imminent monitoring of this attack on Kyiv.
