L“The suspect suffered gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Sheriff Robert Luna, who described a manhunt that ended with a man who was shot from inside a white police van and then killed himself.

The latter was identified as Hu Can Tran, who is of Asian descent and 72 years old. He is the only suspect in the shooting, and Luna said the motive for the Lunar New Year’s attack in Monterey Park is still unknown and the investigation is ongoing.

After killing 10 people in their 50s and 60s, the gunman went to another nearby dance hall, but was disarmed by two men there and fled.

The weapon found was not an assault rifle, but “a semi-automatic assault pistol with a magazine (…) a high-capacity long-life magazine attached,” Sheriff Luna described Sunday.

A hunt

The manhunt for the suspect, broadcast live on multiple media outlets, ended in Torrance, about 45 kilometers from Monterey Park, where law enforcement officers eventually located his vehicle.

Then the police entered with great caution. In images from AFP, we see a lifeless body in front.

In the wake of recent police reports, US President Joe Biden has ordered flags decorating public buildings to be lowered to half-mast.

“While we still don’t know much about the motive for this senseless attack, we do know that many families are grieving tonight, or praying for their loved one to recover from their injuries,” Mr. Biden said in a statement.
