AUGUSTA, GA – Tiger Woods decided to play in the 2022 Masters in a bid to win his 16th major tournament, sixth green jacket, and 83rd PGA Round event — just 14 months after losing his right leg in a car crash. It was a shocking turn of events when Woods made his decision, and while his efforts over the first two rounds at the Augusta National made it look as if he made the right call, Tiger’s play over the weekend was to play a golfer who wasn’t quite the same. In good health and in no position to compete across the entire tournament.
What Woods showed in Augusta this week, however, was a source of unquestionable and endless persistence. Which is why, as he walked across a sea of sponsors after just making a 156 weekend ticket to finish the T47 – the worst in history at the Masters – he had a big smile on his face.
No one, perhaps even Woods himself, would have expected Tiger to finish 72 holes in the 2022 Masters.
I had the same questions [about whether I could complete 72 holes]. It was an incredible feeling,” Woods told CBS after walking off the field on Sunday. A tribute from all the fans – I don’t think words can really describe it given where I was a little over a year ago and what my prospects were at the time. To end up here and be able to play all four rounds, even a month ago, I didn’t know if I could do it. I think it was positive. I have some work to do, and I’m looking forward to it.”
After impressing with a score of 71 on Thursday and a 22nd straight Masters run from his pro career on Friday, Woods finished this trip through the Augusta National in a pair of 78 seconds on Saturday and Sunday. Scores over 6 were, separately, the worst rounds of his career for Augusta, and his weekend total of 156 was easily his highest score over the course of either of his two Masters tours.
Woods started well enough with a birdie in the second, but swayed numbers 4-6, No. 11 and No. 14 before scoring a double bogey at 17. He finished 13 in the championship.
The still-recovering right leg – Woods used his cane as a cane repeatedly throughout the weekend – showed significant fatigue (at least), and he was unable to show his normal discipline throughout the course. Most notable was Tiger’s posture, which can most generously be described as effortless. Woods himself joked that he took “thousands” of hits on Saturday.
Tiger decided to play Augusta National to compete and win. He wasn’t on the field just to play the course he’s famous for. He competed with all his might again on Sunday, making the finish line in a bid to overcome immense adversity.
