TicWatch Pro 5 lacks Google Assistant

Wear OS 3 brought a lot of positive changes to the smartwatch platform but also some frustrating issues. Like other smartwatches, Mobvoi’s new TicWatch Pro 5 will lack Google Assistant support in the new update.

Google Assistant was a major selling point for older versions of Wear OS, but it’s been bypassed or missing since the advent of Wear OS 3. Google’s Pixel Watch was the first to launch with support, and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 both got access via updates. . But other Wear OS 3 watches, like the one in fossil and Montblanc, they had no support in any capacity.

From the looks of things, this is something Google is intentionally and, oddly enough, getting in the way of generic Wear OS watches, and it’s affecting the TicWatch Pro 5 as well.

The Assistant is not installed in the new smartwatch, and it cannot be downloaded from the Play Store. While that’s unfortunate in and of itself, it’s also very frustrating because the lack of Google Assistant leaves the TicWatch Pro 5 without any voice assistant — Fossil at least has Alexa.

Talking to 9to5GoogleMobvoi confirmed that it is working with Google for Assistant support in the future. But, with Google backtracking on Assistant elsewhere too, I wouldn’t expect any news here for a while.
