The WGA’s powerful rally and rally for a fair decade began in Los Angeles with thousands of union members including Damon Lindelof and Boots Riley taking to the parks and streets.
Mrs. Davis Lindelof & Riley, exec producer, Amazon Series I’m Virgostarring Jharrel Jerome out this week, and he was joined by WGA leadership including WGA West President Meredith Stiehm, former President David Goodman, Vice President Michele Mulroney, Treasurer Betsy Thomas and WGA Board Member Liz Alper as the group assembled in the Pan Pacific Park.
Stiehm told Deadline that the writers were “motivated”. “Showing solidarity, energy and fighting on Day 51 of the strike… We are definitely doing our best,” she said, adding that the WGA is “open every day” for AMPTP to come back to the negotiating table.
The parade will then head west along Third Street, south into Fairfax, then east on Sixth Street to La Brea Tar Pits, where there will be live music and many speakers.
Riley, founder of the political hip-hop group The Coup, will be performing alongside I need a Dollar Singer Aloe Blacc at the event, which is hosted by WGAW Board of Directors and Negotiating Committee member Adam Conover. Presentations and speakers are expected around noon Pacific Day.
The WGA was joined by a contingent of other unions including the SAG, the American Federation of Musicians and the International Labor Union of North America (LiUNA).
Alex Aguilar, Business Director of LiUNA! Local 724, Deadline said that solidarity is key.
“We have to continue to support each other… Never have unions been united in this way before,” he said. “We need to show employers how important it is that we stay united together in this fight for the men and women of the entertainment industry.”
Conover added, “The energy is high, we’ve got the same energy we had on day one, and that’s why we’re going to win.”
