The typical mover to Florida makes $55,000 a year, is a Millennial or Generation Xer, married, and has moved from New York and California.

Business Insider's analysis of individual-level data from The Census Bureau's 2022 American Community Surveycompiled by the University of Minnesota IBOMS programfound that movers to Florida were of older generations, were more likely to be married, and were less likely to be employed than movers leaving Florida.

Others enjoy the state's relaxed lifestyle, access to entrepreneurial resources, and diverse cultural experiences. The state's strong economy is also expanding thanks to young movers opening new businesses.

Boomers might have been expected to make up a large portion of those moving to Florida at 23.9%, and many of them are moving to retire. Millennials were the largest generation in terms of mobile at 29.3%, while Gen Z and Generation X were just over 20% each.

Those who move to Florida make over $7,500 more than those who leave with $55,115.48. However, only 57.6% of immigrants to Florida are employed, with 3.7% unemployed and 37.4% out of the labor force, meaning they are students, retired, or not actively looking for work.

Many more of them move to Florida to buy a home than those who leave. More than 49% of those moving to Florida are homebuyers – compared to 37% of those moving. The average home value is about $503,000 for those who move in.

Those moving to Florida come from large states like New York and California, as well as others from the Northeast. Of the nearly 739,000 people who moved to Florida between 2021 and 2022, 91,200 moved from New York, while 50,700 moved from California. New Jersey, Georgia and Texas had more than 38,000 engines.

Those moving to Florida are also more likely to marry than those leaving at 48.9% and 39.5%, respectively. About 11% of those moving to Florida are divorced, while 4.6% are widowed.

“I think this is the largest migration we will certainly see in our generation — but perhaps in our lifetime,” Holly Meyer Lucas, a real estate agent in South Florida, told BI.

Hundreds of thousands of new immigrants to the state have pushed some areas into a housing and affordability crisis. Some former residents told BI that the rapid rise in the cost of living prompted them to flee to neighboring states or across the country.
