Clarence Dixon, a 66 – year – old native of Navajo, died at 10:30 a.m. local time (Brussels 7:30 p.m.) after receiving a death sentence at a Florence state prison, prison services said in a statement. From Arizona.
In January 1978, he stabbed, strangled and raped 21-year-old Tina Pavtoin in Tempe.
He was sentenced to life in prison in 1986 for sexual assault and was misrepresented thanks to DNA analysis for the student’s death.
“I may see you on the other side, Tina. I do not know you, I do not remember you,” he said before the sentence was carried out, according to a witness quoted by a local newspaper.
His lawyers filed several appeals, arguing that their client was blind and suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and did not understand why he was sentenced to death.
Mr. Dixon “lives in his head, he lives in parallel facts,” his lawyer Eric Zuckerman said during a hearing in the San Francisco Court of Appeals on Tuesday, which rejected his appeal.
The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a final request for an injunction filed just hours before the execution.
