Of course, until Dorin and his people discovered the legendary stone beneath their halls in Khuzad-dom, no one knew for sure that Mithrill was real, but Gil-Glad always seemed to suspect it, and hoped it might happen. mind.

But why is mithril so important to elves? Because, apparently, from another tree.
