Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 earbuds have a new design and better ANC

Since the original pair debuted in 2018, Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless earbuds have received a lot of praise for their sound quality. After releasing a sequel in 2020Sennheiser is announcing the third product in the series today—and this time, it’s been significantly redesigned. It will be available starting May 10 in black, graphite and white for $249.95.

The Momentum True Wireless 3 buds look closer to CX And CX Plus A true wireless network compared to their direct predecessors. Sennheiser has clearly settled on some kind of universal design language for its earbud lineup, and that’s reflected here. Momentums make a sleeker, more distinct impression than the company’s cheaper buds.

The fabric-covered case is similar in shape and size to previous versions, although Sennheiser has moved the USB-C charging port forward. This is becoming increasingly common, with companies like Jabra recently making the same change. It seems a little strange at first but could be more convenient in some charging scenarios. This new case also supports wireless charging, a feature that didn’t exist on previous models – and one that’s hard to accept given the asking price.

Aside from the updated style, Sennheiser says its latest earbuds offer improvements in comfort, active noise cancellation, and call quality. But in two key areas – sound quality and battery life – they aren’t major upgrades. Momentum True Wireless 3s continue to use the engines of the German manufacturer, which have a diameter of 7 mm. Sennheiser’s mobile app now lets you take a listening test to better customize the bass, mid, and treble, but at least based on the press release, I’d expect the overall audio profile to be similar. True Wireless 3s supports AAC, SBC and aptX adaptation Bluetooth decoding and encryption systems. The latter should reduce any perceptible latency when using buds with devices that also use aptX Adaptive, while also reaching higher bit rates than AAC.

Sennheiser has implemented adaptive noise cancellation, which allows the Momentum True Wireless 3s to automatically adjust the amount of noise cancellation based on your changing surroundings. The company says that its “system constantly monitors ambient noise to suppress it in real time,” although users still have the option to manually adjust it to their preference.

Both earbuds now have three microphones, which Sennheiser says has led to notable improvements and “super-clear quality” for both voice and video calls. Battery life remains for seven hours of continuous operation with the charging case remaining an additional 21 hours. The Momentum True Wireless 3s are IPX4 certified for water resistance, making them suitable for exercise and light rain.

Aside from the revamped look, Sennheiser doesn’t make any drastic changes with the Momentum True Wireless 3s. They still lack multipoint Bluetooth technology, for example. The company appears confident that it will appeal to the same market as previous models in the series: people who prioritize sound quality above all else.

Sennheiser also recently viewed Sport True Wireless $199.95 Earphones to compete against the likes of Beats Fit Pros. The unique aspect of the Sport Buds is that the Sennheiser has both open and closed ear tips, allowing owners to switch between the two depending on the activity and how well aware of their surroundings they need to be. Open transducers will reduce the intensity of body noises such as breathing and footsteps, while closed ends give you more isolation. The Sport True Wireless also adds dust resistance to the equation, with an IP54 rating.
