The death toll from a Russian missile attack on an apartment building in the central Ukrainian city of Uman reached at least 23 on Friday, making it one of the deadliest incidents involving civilians in Ukraine this year.
Deliberately or recklessly attacking a civilian population is a war crime. In all, at least 8,574 civilians have died since the Russian invasion in February 2022, and 14,441 have been wounded, it said. The latest data is from the United Nations, which warns that the real numbers are likely a long way off Larger. For its part, Moscow denies that it targeted civilians, despite evidence to the contrary.

2022:
Kharkiv city
Few places in Ukraine were more damaged in the first weeks of the Russian invasion than Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city after the capital. Local authorities said in mid-March 2022 that at least 500 civilians were killed in Russian rocket and missile attacks on apartment complexes and public buildings. That month was the deadliest of the war for civilians, according to United Nations data.
Mariupol Theatre
A Russian airstrike destroyed a theater in the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol on March 16. The word “Children” was written in large white letters outside to show that civilians were sheltering in the building. Amnesty International said in a report that at least ten people were killed, “and possibly many more”. Survivors told a New York Times reporter that between 60 and 200 people were killed. The attack took place during the siege of the city, which fell to Russian forces in May. The UN’s chief human rights official said that Mariupol was probably the “bloodiest place in Ukraine” in the first three months of the war.
Kramatorsk Train Station
More than 50 civilians were killed when Russian forces bombed a train station in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, in Donetsk Province, on April 8. Civilians, including women and children, were fleeing the fighting in the district. The attack marked the beginning of the Russian campaign to capture the entire Donbass region.
Kremenchuk Shopping Center
A senior government official said that a Russian missile strike on June 27 on a shopping center in the industrial city of Kremenchug in the Poltava region of central Ukraine killed 20 people and wounded 59 others.
Chasiv Yar Apartment Building
A Russian raid on an apartment complex in Chasev Yar, a small city in Donetsk province, on July 9 killed at least 43 people, according to local emergency services. Ukrainian authorities said that Russian forces used several rocket launchers in the attack.
Vinnitsa Shopping Centre
Russian cruise missiles hit a shopping mall, dance studio and wedding hall in Vinnytsia, a city in central Ukraine hundreds of miles from the front line, on July 14. Down’s syndrome.
Zaporizhia convoy
Russian missiles struck a convoy of vehicles carrying people fleeing fighting in the Zaporizhia region, southern Ukraine, on September 30, killing at least 30 people and wounding 88 others.
2023:
Dnipro residential building
A heavy-duty missile designed to sink ships exploded in a Ukrainian city densely packed with homes and shops on January 15, destroying a nine-story apartment building. The strike killed 46 people, including six children.
Sloviansk
A Russian missile attack on a residential neighborhood in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sloviansk on April 14 killed At least 13 peopleincluding a two-year-old child.
