Nintendo announces the release of Mario Red Edition Switch OLED, in October

Nintendo has announced the Mario Red Edition Nintendo Switch OLED, and it will launch in stores on October 6th.

It was revealed during Super Mario Bros. Ultimate. Wonder Direct today, the OLED comes with two red Joy-Cons, a red base, and some secrets hidden in the back And inside the console.

It’s simple and elegant, and we love the coins hidden behind the back panel. Pre-orders are available at the link below, and you’ll find some great close-ups of the console itself at the bottom of the page.

An RPG lover first and a Nintendo fan second, Alana can often be found thinking a lot about battle strategies, characters, and stories. Fortunately, she’s also easily happy with anything related to Yoshi, creepy-but-cute Pokemon, and SEGA’s air pirates.

It looks good but nowhere near as good as Tears of the Kingdom OLED.

“It does the job” is a good way to describe this variant imo

I feel like kind of an eye bleed honestly. The red Joycons are nice but the red controller and red dock are just glowy.

The coins inside are a nice touch.

Why does every special edition have great details but when it comes to Mario, Nintendo always forgets how to add details and says “Oh, red! Looks like Mario’s color”

I mean, it’s okay… but with the colors being just red, I feel like it’s kind of a missed opportunity, I think they could have put pictures of various Mario power-ups to promote the new game.

I feel like this way you keep the red color and the son color is now thrown in.

It’s stylish but they try their best to hide the Mario details, no fancy details, nothing fancy about this model to promote Super Mario Bros Wonder, really.

The Green Luigi version, the pink Peach version, or the yellow Daisy version would be more interesting, IMO.

I’ve never been a big fan of the controller itself being colored. I feel like this really limits the number of Joy-Con combinations that can look good with it.

Why are there 19 coins?

This is annoyingly different enough from the last red that makes me want to add it to the collection…

Personally, I find the original Anniversary Edition red tablet to look really cool. This OLED device looks less red around the bezel, but I think it gains a red undertone, which the original stupidly lacked.

I missed the direct, no amiibo take it?

There’s no mention of Wonder at all, no gaming bundle, just a red OLED switch.

There’s nothing wrong with a red Switch, but releasing it alongside Wonder without even minimal connection to that game is Nintendo’s thing.🤷🏻‍♂️

This is why we got the Wonder Direct because it would have been announced a bit late in mid-September during the live stream proper.
I think it would have made more sense to release a Wonder-themed Nintendo Switch Lite model, but they’re probably phasing out the Lite variants.

I’m super excited for the game, but this red wouldn’t fit in my living room.

Well, but I like my version of Pokemon better haha.

The sidewalk should be blue. To match Mario’s clothes and make him look more interesting.

I’m disappointed that Nintendo didn’t bother to make the tablet red like they did with the one in the Mario 3D World package.

@Sequel No amiibo. The direct stopped as if it had hit a brick wall after the switch appeared. The Direct was full of stuff though and it’s worth watching, don’t think reading about it will do it justice.

I would have preferred a Switch lite in red instead.

I think the main reason this is being brought up is because Wonder will be shown at PAX West and Nintendo Live

@rjejr I just noticed the back, but why isn’t the red plastic on the front like the Mario 3D World tablet. Sheer laziness on Nintendo’s part.

I think they are trying to get rid of their final stock of Switches before they release the new Switch next year and rebrand with
Mario themed controller.

What a weird easter egg. Just show something at the front of the dock to let people have my key be a special edition I swear

Although it’s great and matches my Doom collection on Switch, I already got the Tears of the Kingdom collection, so I don’t have the money to buy this collection. Still getting the game though.

What made you say this? In my mind, they phased out the $300 Switch and $350 OLED when they launched the $400 Super Switch, but kept the $200 Lite for the kids until the $300 Super Lite was ready a year or two after launch. Most games in the first year or two will probably be dual platform anyway, see Sony and MS.

They could have used more Mario stuff instead of just a little Mario in the corner and some coins plus some use of blue, that’s okay

@rjejr They’ve stopped making Switch Lite Special Editions entirely. The last one was for the Diamond and Pearl remake. Even the OG Switch got a new special earlier this year with the release of the Mario movie. It is also the lowest selling according to weekly Japanese sales figures. The OLED variant is also set to soon overtake the Lite variant entirely in Japan.

This isn’t even close to the Splatoon and Zelda OLED models. I expected something more colorful.

I also bet they’ll bring out a bright pink OLED display next year for Princess Peach.

@Serpenterror I would have bought that, it could have been all of the Pikmin on the back and had the multi-colored joysticks.

I’m very afraid that the day I buy a Switch OLED will be the day they announce the Switch 2

I bought some “mario red” Joycons from Japan 3-4 years ago, and they look exactly like this.

Couldn’t they at least print a white “M” or something like that to make it look unique?

Not much for that. No design at all on the back of the Switch itself?
