There’s a reason Cleveland is known as the “Sorrow Factory.” The Brown Arguably they had more unlikely losses than any other team in NFL history and added another team to their heartbreaking total on Sunday with a 30-17 blowout lead to New York Jets In just 85 seconds.
With 1:55 left to play on Sunday, Nick Chubb scored to put Browns 30-17 ahead and it looks like Cleveland was on the cusp of victory, but when you talk about Brown, there’s nothing like heading towards victory.
In a stunning turn of events, the Jets scored two goals to go down by just 60 seconds, allowing them to steal a 31-30 win. If you are wondering how impossible it is to lose, here is your answer.
For the most part, the Browns played a great game, but they couldn’t get past six fouls, all of which occurred within the last two minutes.
The biggest came from Chubb, who could have taken the win if he had simply fallen to the floor instead of scoring a TD with 1:55 remaining. If he had, it would have been game over because the run gave Cleveland their first touchdown and the planes had no time left.
We’ve seen running backs come down at the 1-yard line before, but Chubb hasn’t done that here. Even if he was out of bounds, Brown could simply kneel three times in a row to take the win.
Chubb’s slip wasn’t Brown’s only mistake. Last week’s champ with Brown, Kid Yorke, definitely wasn’t the champ this week. Brown had 31 points at the end of the game, but York missed the extra point after Chubb went down. The missed kick left the Browns just 13 points ahead, which helped open the door for the Jets’ comeback.
York and Chubb’s mistakes wouldn’t have mattered if Brown’s defense hadn’t given up on the long touchdown, which brings us to the third mistake: Brown somehow left Corey Davis wide open for a 66-yard touchdown.
(NB: Ignore the NFL info in the tweet, the score was 66 yards, not 76.)
Even after Joe Flacco hit Davis in the score with 1:22 left to cut Cleveland’s lead to 30-24, Brown could have snatched the win by reclaiming a Jets kick to the side, but instead, we got the fourth foul. In a Jets kick to the side, the ball bounced from Amary Cooper’s hands to New York’s Justin Hardy.
Nine games after recovery, the Jets would score a green-light touchdown with a 15-yard pass from Flacco to Garrett Wilson (giving up TD was their number five mistake).
Even after lagging behind, Brown had a chance to win. With six seconds left, Browns were in their 46 position and needed roughly eight to 10 yards to give York a realistic opportunity to make a field goal. However, York did not stand a chance to win the match because Jacobi Brissett threw a sixth foul interception.
It was a total breakdown in a game that Brown did not lose. Their “F-” performance over the last two minutes was completely overshadowed by the fact that they played good football in the better part of three quarters.
