An imam from Newark, near New York, was seriously injured in a shooting Wednesday morning and was hospitalized in critical condition, police in the New Jersey city announced.
According to an email from the Newark Public Safety press office, police responded before dawn after a man was shot in one or more shots outside a mosque in this industrial and multicultural city.
“The victim was taken to University Hospital and, according to information, is in a critical summer,” said Fritz Frege, director of public safety in Newark, but without commenting on a possible motive for the attack by the ball.
His spokesman confirmed to AFP that the man, who he did not identify, was “in fact the imam” of the town west of Manhattan across the Hudson River.
“We are deeply troubled by this incident and pray for the imam's speedy recovery,” condemned the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAR), the New Jersey branch of the Organization to Protect Islam and American Muslims.
Since the start of the war in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas, the United States and especially New York and its region, in the northeast of the country, have been rocked by many demonstrations, social tensions and some sporadic violence. .
New York City alone, home to 8.5 million people, has nearly two million Jewish Americans, the second largest population after Israel, and hundreds of thousands of Muslims.
