GM remembers Nearly 820,000 pickup trucks due to a potential safety issue with tailgates.

says the automaker The electronic latch mechanism used to open the tailgate of some 2020-2024 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra truck beds may short-circuit if water gets into the tailgate. This means that the gate could be inadvertently opened while the vehicle is parked, causing unsecured property to spill out into the bed when unaware drivers hit the road.

GM did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

In a report published on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration websiteGeneral Motors said it had received more than 130 complaints about opening the tailgate while driving the car. But the company said that the gate can only be opened when the car is parked.

“(Control logic) in the body control module (BCM) will prevent release of the tailgate latch when the vehicle is in gear, even if the BCM receives a release signal from the external touchpad switch,” the company wrote, warning owners. Make sure they manually close the tailgate before driving until the recall is complete.

GM said it received one complaint of minor injuries and three complaints of minor property damage.

The recall includes more than 570,000 cars sold in the United States and about 249,000 cars sold in Canada. Dealers will replace the external switch that opens the tailgate with a more water-resistant material.

GM said it will start letting customers know if their car is affected on March 18.
