Steve Altemus, CEO of Intuitive Machines, explains how the company's IM-1 lander flipped onto the lunar surface during a NASA press conference on February 22, 2023.

The intuitive instruments initially reported that Odysseus was standing upright. But, in an update late Friday, company executives said they believe the spacecraft stuck its landing gear sideways on the lunar surface during its descent and flip.
Even though Odysseus is on his side, he is still sending data. Intuitive Machines expects the Odysseus rover to operate until Tuesday morning, when its solar panels will no longer be exposed to sunlight.
Intuitive Machines stock fell as much as 30% in Monday trading from its previous close of $9.59 per share.
The Odysseus lander carried 12 government and commercial payloads — six of them for NASA under a $118 million contract through the agency's Commercial Lunar Payload Services, or CLPS, initiative.
NASA leadership stressed that the IM-1 mission was still successful despite the spacecraft capsizing, and described the landing as a “tremendous achievement.”

One payload, “EagleCam,” is a small camera developed by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. EagleCam was originally scheduled to be deployed in the final moments of Odysseus' landing, to capture the first images of the lunar landing from outside the spacecraft, but a problem with the lander's navigation system meant the camera was not deployed. Intuitive Machines still plans to launch EagleCam from the lander at a later date, the Embry-Riddle team said.
Here are some initial pictures from the landing process:
