Did the big bang break Fortnite? Servers buckle under player stampede

Fortnite was forced to shut down its servers after a massive number of players logged in to watch the second showing of Eminem’s Big Bang event.

On December 2, Fortnite’s highly anticipated Big Bang event was scheduled to start at 2 PM EST. The event will cover all the upcoming content, including LEGO collaboration announcements and more.

The massive popularity of the Big Bang event caused wait times to increase dramatically, with some players waiting for over an hour to join the fun. This prompted Fortnite to release two additional dates for the event featuring an Eminem concert.

Events will be held approximately three hours apart to give time for the event to reset. What Fortnite didn’t expect was that the second event would be even more popular than the first – which would force Epic Games to shut down all Fortnite servers in an attempt to recover.

Fortnite servers are down due to the popularity of the Big Bang event

The official Fortnite status update account on Twitter/X has informed players that they will be shutting down servers for an unknown period of time. This decision came after players began experiencing issues connecting to the game in anticipation of attending the next event.

“We are still working to recover from the overwhelming attendance we experienced at the time of the first event.” Fortnite said. “We are temporarily taking Fortnite offline while we work to set up appearances in a few hours. More information on our upcoming show times soon.

Many users reported that the wait time before the servers shut down was longer than the initial time earlier in the day. One user showed a photo of their wait time, which… It was close to two hours.
