At least six injured in explosion at oil rig off Mexico coast | the world

Six people were injured in an explosion and fire at a gas exploration platform in the Gulf of Mexico, state company Petroleos mexicanos (Pemex) said.

A total of 328 people were working on the platform, of which 321 were evacuated, Pemex added in a statement.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador spoke of the “disappearance” during his traditional daily press conference without elaborating. The president showed photos of flames and columns of smoke on stage in Campeche and Tabasco (southeast) coast. “Pemex firefighters and marines are at the scene,” he added.

Several accidents have affected Pemex facilities in recent months. On February 24, a dozen workers were injured by burns during two fires in the state of Veracruz (southeast).

Public utility infrastructure is also vulnerable to fuel theft.

In January 2019, 137 people died in a pipeline explosion and fire in Tlahuelilpan, Hidalgo state (center). Officials blamed fuel thieves for the tragedy.
