An app lets you travel through the climate of 2080: Belgium turns into… Abruzzo

To better understand the climate over 60 years ago, researchers at the University of Maryland have developed a specific application. The ideal? Cities around the world … show the climate as it will be in 2080.

What if, in 2080, Belgium’s climate becomes similar to that of southern Italy today? It may sound crazy, but that’s exactly what researchers at the University of Maryland in the US have discovered.

According to them, this could happen if we don’t reduce our greenhouse gas emissions very soon. To give you a more concrete idea: it’s 5 degrees higher in summer and 4 degrees higher in winter.

As Professor Matthews Fitzpatrick explains in a University press release, this could lead to a profound upheaval in cities. “By 2080, cities in the Northern Hemisphere will resemble cities in the South. Everything is headed equatorward in terms of climate to come. The closer you get to the equator, the less suitable climates are in places like Central America, South Florida, and North Africa. (…)”.

In order for people to get an idea of what we can expect, they have created an app that allows us to see what the climate is expected to be in 2080 in a specific location compared to today’s climate.

To try the app, it Here.
