A pilot collapsed and died in the bathroom during a commercial flight from Miami to Chile — which resulted in an emergency landing in Panama Sunday night, according to sources on the plane.
Evan Andor, 56, was at the helm of a LATAM flight to Santiago at around 11 p.m. when he had an apparent heart attack, According to the sun.
The newspaper reported that the pilots accompanying him were forced to make an emergency landing at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City, where a nurse and two doctors on board rushed to save him.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t have the necessary or sufficient supplies to perform a good resuscitation,” said the nurse, who was known only as Isadora on social media.
“Latin America needs to improve the issue of protocol in a health and medical emergency like this where lives can be saved but resources are needed.”
It wasn’t immediately clear what “resources” she was referring to.
One passenger said the co-pilot asked if there were any doctors on board about 40 minutes after takeoff.
The passenger, who did not reveal his identity, said: “They told us that we were going to land because the pilot felt ill, and when we arrived, they asked us to evacuate the plane because the situation had worsened.”
The passengers were booked into hotels in Panama City and the flight resumed on Tuesday.
