Charli XCX opened up about her three-word tweet that helped kick off Vice President Kamala Harris’ wildly successful presidential campaign.
On July 21, hours after President Joe Biden dropped his re-election campaign and endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee, the 32-year-old British pop star, whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison, expressed her approval with a simple tweet: “Kamala is a naughty girl.”
Harris’ campaign quickly took advantage of the singer’s blessing, sharing a screenshot of her post on TikTok. It also included a photo of their own version of Charli’s lime green colorway. brat Album cover.
Addressing the viral phenomenon in a new interview with eagleThe “Apple” singer admitted she didn’t necessarily mean for her message to be interpreted as a political endorsement. She said she meant it to be “something positive and lighthearted.”
But she admitted: “Being on the right side of democracy, and the right side of women’s rights, is very important to me. I am happy to help prevent democracy from failing forever.”
“I obviously knew what I was doing,” she joked. “Did I think my talk about being a messy bitch, partying, needing a Bic lighter and a pack of Marlboros would end up on CNN? No.”
The “naughty kid” culture that Charlie promoted has made headlines ever since, with numerous news programs, including CNN, and political pundits trying to decode the meaning behind the Gen Z slang.
The term “spoiled child” is a noun and means a symbol or embrace of authenticity and self-confidence.
Despite the 2024 presidential election being energized among young voters, Charlie has made it clear she is not a “political artist.”

“I’m not Bob Dylan, and I’ve never pretended to be,” she said. “My music is not political. Everything I do in my life is reflected in my art. Everything I say, wear, think, enjoy—it all comes back to my art. Politics does not feed my art.”
Elsewhere in the extended interview, Charli discussed the inspiration behind her song “Empathy Is a Knife,” which is widely believed to be about Taylor Swift.
“People will think whatever they want to think,” she said. “This song is about me and my feelings and my insecurities and the way my mind creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.”
The two artists have recently been competing on the music charts after Swift released new UK-only versions of her latest album. Tortured Poets SectionWhich made her rush brat to number one in the UK charts.
