60-year-old grandmother kills great white shark in incredibly rare moment: VIDEO

world News

Horrifying footage has shown the moment a 60-year-old grandmother was attacked and killed by a great white shark.

This incredibly rare fatal encounter, which was filmed as part of the National Geographic limited series, “Queens,” showed the killer whale, named Sophia, attacking and biting off a shark.

“Orca are very smart animals,” Dr. Chris Lowe He told ABC News. “They are very powerful, and in some cases, perhaps stronger than a white shark.”

Scientists believe this is the first time a single orca has been filmed killing a great white shark.

“I think what we're seeing is probably an anomaly. I don't think this happens very often,” Lowe said. “We often think of white sharks as the number one predator in the ocean when in reality they are killer whales.”

Killer whales, also known as killer whales, can grow to nearly 30 feet long and can weigh up to six tons. They are social animals that usually live in groups, known as pods, that work together to hunt food.

The lone wolf's shark attack may be an adaptation caused by climate change.

Killer whales appear to be becoming more aggressive, with numerous reports in the past few years of whales attacking ships. Some of the attacks appear to be motivated by revenge.

In one incident off the coast of Gibraltar, a killer whale tore off the rudder of a catamaran with its teeth.

“It probably has to do with behaviors and how they react to these things,” Lowe said. “Whether they're, you know, just making those a nuisance, which is very different from attacking and killing something that you're going to get food from.”
