It was the girl's neighbor who alerted the authorities. “She is my son's best friend. She was abused by her mother and one day she told me the whole story and asked me for help,” she told RTVE. According to the latter, the young woman lived in constant fear of her mother. After reporting the suspected abuse, she again contacted the police, suspecting the girl was missing.

After this call for help, the Guardia Civil discovered that the woman was being forced into marriage in exchange for 3,000 euros. She was found in an apartment in the neighboring city of Granada, Paz, where she was to marry a 17-year-old.

The couple denies the facts

Authorities arrested the mother and stepfather who took away €3,800 they said they earned from olive harvesting. The mother, for her part, categorically denies the allegations, maintaining that her daughter was seeing “her friend”.

The couple has three other children, ages 5, 7 and 8. They were taken care of by social services.
