These are the pillars of any great team

As I understand it, the “distinguished” positions in the draft are quarterback, tackle, rim rusher, and running back. Did I miss anything? How special must a “non-privileged” player be to warrant a first-round pick?

These are the pillars of any great team. If one of them is missing, it is better that the situations around him are amazing. This is a quarterback league and the situations that directly affect the QB are often pre-protecting the QB, pressing the QB and intercepting the QB. This does not mean that players outside of this category will not be eligible for selection in the first round. It’s just that if a running back, defensive tackle, or guard is made in the first round, they will be considered the best in their positions and expectations will be set accordingly.

What was the biggest learning curve for Jordan Love once he took over as QB of the Packers?

Just dealing with the tides of him being the NFL’s starting quarterback and defenses specifically for the game planning to shut him down on a weekly basis.

With quite a few subsequent picks, where do you think the team will fill in positions?

The Packers have 25 roster spots available after signing just two outside agents, safety Tarvarius Moore and long snapper Matt Orzech. So, they’ll be hitting the water wherever they throw their drag stones in April. But at the end of the day, Day Three’s pick is as much about finding talent as filling the depth charts. History shows that Green Bay isn’t afraid to oversaturate certain positions in hopes of finding a Pro Bowl player, whether it’s drafting David Bakhtiari and JC Tretter in 2013, picking Aaron Jones and Jamal Williams in a round off each other in 2017, or Three receivers they picked last year.

Hey guys, with all the draft questions about taking action, why don’t we just draft the next Bakhtiari in the fourth round again? Seems simple to me.

What a crazy year 2013 has been… there were five offensive linemen picked in the first 15 draft picks and Lin Johnson (#4) is still on the NFL roster. Meanwhile, there’s David Bakhtiari, a Hall of Fame-caliber left fielder sitting around, intimidatingly, waiting to dominate. Football is a funny and funny game.

Good morning, Wes. Yesterday there were a lot of questions about the OT position. Is Zach Tom still ready to start working at RT?

Zach Tom is a mix of jobs all over, including mine on the website if I’m not careful.

Wes morning. If Jordon Love takes all the first-team snaps in training camp like he should, how can you prepare a backup with no NFL experience to back him up? Thanks.

The same way the Packers did with Love and Tim Boyle. Love will take virtually all of his first-team reps this summer and rightfully so, but that doesn’t mean all training picks. The #2 QB will still run the second-team offense in training camp and the team’s scout offense during the regular season.

How much do you think he has left? I know there was a broken thumb that limited play. Is his play back and to what level? Will there be enough supporting cast?

Matthew is from Janesville, Wisconsin

In your opinion, would the value of the AR12 change if he was traded after the draft? Will the Packers be able to get more for him if the picks are next year and not this year? If I were the Jets, I wouldn’t complete the trade until after the draft. They have three picks in the top 43 and I want those to be as impressive as possible to help win the SB Championship this year.

I don’t think Rodgers’ value is changing, but the compensation formula is probably because there is no longer any certainty about the compensation Green Bay is getting. Again, I don’t want to discuss leverage. All I know is that Jordan Love was in town Monday for the start of the Green Bay offseason, which means that team is one step closer to 2023.

Insiders, this thought often bothered me. I’m trying to put myself in the shoes of a regional scout. You spend a good portion of your fall flying/driving around the area trying to scout college talent. You watch and collect the movie. you analyze. You report to General Motors. You are convinced that you are discovering a talent…the crowning achievement of your career. Then your GM trades that footage away over the course of several years. Your job… useless. Have you ever talked to Scouts who put up with this?

That’s just the nature of the scouting business. The Scout’s job is to organize. They do their best to identify talent and present their findings to key employees. If their work is correct, it will be appreciated. It’s also not like this research and intel is not valuable to an organization in the long run either. For example, the Packers did a great deal of homework on De’Vondre Campbell in 2016, but he was off the plate before Green Bay could take him. It took another five years for the Packers to finally catch up with Campbell, but eventually it did.
