The Guardians take Travis Bazana, the tracker.

He plays

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Cleveland Guardians selected Oregon State center fielder Travis Bazzana with the No. 1 pick in Sunday’s Major League Baseball draft, choosing an enticing package of speed, defense and college prowess.

Shortly after the festivities began at the venerable Cowtown Coliseum at the Stockyards in Fort Worth, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced that the Guardians had selected Bazzana, a 21-year-old Australian native who hit 28 home runs, stole 16 bases and posted a 1.479 OPS, to the Beavers in 2024.

The Rangers selected Bazana over speedy center fielder JJ Weatherholt of West Virginia, as well as several college power players. He is expected to move quickly through the minor leagues after drafting himself at the 1/1 position this year after a childhood spent in Australia playing cricket and other sports.

But he focused on baseball, and soon joined perennial star Jose Ramirez on the Cleveland team.

Bazina was a career pitcher who hit for a .360 average in three seasons at Corvallis and was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year. He joined Adley Rutschman (Orioles, 2019) as the only Oregon players to be selected first overall.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected shortstop J.J. Weatherholt from West Virginia with the seventh pick, a huge value for a player some expected to be selected first. Weatherholt hit for a .370 batting average in 557 games with the Mountaineers, but he suffered a hamstring injury in 2024.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Jack Caglianone had another dominant season batting for the Florida Gators, hitting a .419 batting average with 35 home runs and 72 RBIs. He became the first player to hit 30 consecutive home runs in SEC history, leading Florida to its second consecutive College World Series appearance while setting school records for home runs in a single season (35) and a career (75).
