Remember good old times when we were children, and how we used to pretend that our backyard cabby-houses were ‘the offices’ that we went to ‘work’ at, trying to emulate our parents’ behavior? In an unusual, but welcome development the UK based company Archipod has designed and built an actual ‘cabby-house’ for the adults that you can use as a work-from-home office, installing it in your backyard. Currently, there are two designs available, the Archipod and the Bigger Pod, but the company is also developing other options. For example, how to blend the two designs together, creating some kind of the ‘super-pod’ in the process.

The company’s philosophy is simple and quite rational. While the cost and inconvenience of commuting to work every day are increasing, the advances in computer and networking technology are making the viability of working from home a realistic alternative to traveling to an office every day. By installing the pod, you will save not only on travel time and costs, but also reduce road congestion, and succeed in separating ‘work’ time from ‘family/home’ time. Since you will need to heat the pod only when you work, you will probably reduce your heating bills too – unless you live somewhere beyond the Arctic circle. Last, but not least, your pod will be a fortress of solitude; it is supposed to be a very quiet space where outside noises and interferences are minimised.

So if you are prepared to move your office to your backward and work from home, you care for the environment, and you want your office to be minimalist, yet clean and efficient, and you do not mind parting with about 25,000$ (its starting price), then the Archipod is the pod for you. Built in a shape of the futuristic orb that somewhat resembles hobbit houses from the Lord of the Rings, the Archipod, like a coconut, is brown and rugged on the outside, but white and smooth when you open it up and look inside.

The Archipod is a curved plywood structural box with encapsulated fiberglass insulation, fully plastered and decorated after installation. Its walls use a double design of insulation, starting with high-performance foil insulation and vapor barrier, and an additional three to four inches of mineral-fiber within the curved panel construction and the floor. All construction joints are sealed to minimise air leakage. The roof dome is double skinned polycarbonate, and the porthole windows are double-glazed. For extreme environments, there is an option to increase the insulation in the walls, and the glazing can be triple layered.

An ergonomic semicircular desk is the centerpiece of the Archipod office, while drawer units, shelves, and seating are also available by special request. The floor is constructed from SIPS panels with 3” closed cell foam insulation: the concrete foundation blocks are included. It is important to accentuate that the thermal insulation also contributes greatly to the acoustic insulation, and you will find that the Pod is a very quiet space to work from. Unlike most sheds, you can lock Archipod from inside to ensure no one disturbs you during your work or quiet time.

As well as lights, there are data connections inside, plus a water supply and a radiator. The Archipod comes with a twelve-month fully inclusive warranty and a three-year warranty against structural defects and leakage. If you require extended warranties or maintenance agreements, these are available at additional cost. The Archipod comes in prefabricated strips that are 60 cm wide, so it can be carried through ordinary doorways.

The ‘Pod’ is primarily suited to use as a garden office, but could easily be adapted to anything you choose - Playroom, Studio, Hobby Room, Meditation/Quiet Room, Outside entertaining/Dining Room, the Guest or Tree House. It is the environmentally sound unique space with a stunning design customarily tailored for you.
