Boulder, Colorado. – – Derius Davis He scored on a 60-yard return and reversed 27 yards to help the TCU open the Sonny Dykes era with a 38-13 win over Colorado on Friday night.
Dykes took over as longtime TCU coach Gary Patterson after spending the last four seasons at SMU, where he revived the program.
It might have been a late start – about 35 minutes due to lightning in the area – but the horned frogs couldn’t go ahead too soon. Once they did, the buffalo couldn’t stop their speed. The Horned Frogs beat Colorado 31-7 after the first half to turn a close match into a defeat.
“It was a good thing for us not to go all the way early,” Dykes said. “We showed some courage and never blinked.”
The Buffalo entered the game at home as a 13 1/2-point underdog, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
“I’m confident we can fix it because I know we’re a better team than we did and what we played today,” said Colorado coach Karl Durrell. “We are better than that. But I have to stop talking about it. We have to get better.”
Davis ignited a slow TCU early in the second quarter by sending a kick, finding space around the edge and running down the sideline in his fourth career. This ties KaVontae Turpin to the most in the school’s history.
Davis scored in the final quarter of a tricky game to make it 31-6 and take the win.
“I just consider every play significant,” Davis said. “That’s who I am now, the kind of player I am.”

The TCU came out with points in all five of its second-half leaderships before kneeling down to close out the match.
The Horned Frogs went with a quarterback Chandler Morris During Max Duggan to start the game. Morris was gone late in the third quarter after a defender fell on his left leg. He had a towel on his head and ice on his knee while Duggan took over.
Duggan designed a 10-yard, 80-yard drive that culminated in a 3-yard TD of Kinder Miller.
“Obviously winning is so much fun, and it makes you feel good,” Duggan said. “But there are things we need to improve.”
Dorrell went with the current QB Brendon Lewis During GT Schrute, a Tennessee transfer who missed the entirety of last season after injuring his knee at camp in Colorado. Dorrell has seen an improvement in Lewis’ performance from last season to this moment and rewarded him.
Shrout came into the game late in the first half and his opening pass went to the Buffaloes for 35 yards. Lewis was back to start the second half before entering Shrout in the final quarter and throwing a TD pass from 23 yards to Jordan Tyson With a remainder of 1:13.
Dorrell will assess the situation before making a decision.
“We will watch the tape. We will evaluate and get a chance to fix and address a few things,” Dorrell said. “But I will tell our fans, there is tension in everyone when the first game comes back. Perhaps the pressure on him was too much – who knows? But I’m sure he’s a better player. I still feel like he’s a better player than last year.”

Honors Branch
The Buffaloes honored the late Cliff Branch, who was recently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Branch played two seasons in Colorado, where he excelled as a receiver and returnee. Branch was a fourth-round draft in 1972 by the Raiders. He had 501 catches for 8,685 yards and 67 touchdowns over the course of 14 seasons with the franchise.
The branch died in 2019 at the age of 71.

Colorado’s longtime sports information director, David Blatty, worked on his 500th game Friday for the Buffaloes football team. Blatty, who is in his 40th season as a full-time employee at Colorado, will retire in January. One of his roles will be the program historian.
