Mike Lynch’s Yacht Sinking Latest News: The Bayesian captain will be questioned again by prosecutors in manslaughter investigation

Being placed under investigation in Italy does not mean that a person has been convicted or that formal charges have been brought against them. Notifications must be sent to those under investigation before the authorities can perform autopsies on dead bodies.

Mike Lynch’s wife, Angela Pakaris, was among the fifteen survivors of the sinking of the Bayesian.

Among the seven dead were her husband and her 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

Many survivors remain in Italy as authorities try to find out what happened on the ship before it sank last week.

But Ms. Bakaris was reported to have left Sicily on Sunday with other survivors on a private plane.

James Cutfield, 51, the captain of the tragic ship Baysian, faces further questioning by prosecutors in Italy today after being placed under investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck.

“Our client is deeply affected by this ordeal,” one of his lawyers, Giovanni Rizzotti, told the Guardian on Monday.

“We are currently, along with other legal representatives, evaluating the defence strategy and examining the technical aspects of the case.”

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio confirmed the opening of an investigation on Saturday.

He said his team would examine every possible element of liability, including the responsibility of the captain, the crew, the individuals responsible for supervision, and the yacht’s manufacturer.

The 184-foot (56-metre) British-flagged luxury yacht “Baizian” sank near a Mediterranean island in southern Italy on Monday.

Investigators are focusing on how the ship, deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and may have been a “burst” – a strong local wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads quickly upon hitting the ground.

The crew, except for the cook, were rescued, while six passengers were trapped inside the hull.

Prosecutors in Italy are continuing to investigate the captain of a luxury yacht that sank during a storm off the coast of Sicily last week.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander who was the captain of the Baysian, was among 15 survivors of the August 19 sinking that killed British technology mogul Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah and five others.

Lawyer Aldo Mordiglia, one of the lawyers appointed to defend the captain, said Catfield is being investigated for manslaughter and causing the ship to sink.

Mr. Mordiglia said Mr. Catfield, who has already been questioned, will be questioned again by prosecutors on Tuesday. He declined to discuss the defense strategy.

Under Italian law, being investigated does not mean conviction and does not necessarily lead to criminal charges.

A lawyer who died after his yacht sank off the coast of Sicily wrote a poignant post on LinkedIn two months before he joined the ill-fated voyage.

In one of his few posts on the site, Christopher Morvillo, 59, thanked his legal team after they helped British tech mogul Mike Lynch win a fraud trial and discussed living “happily ever after.”

Officials said the luxury yacht was hit by a violent storm, and Italian officials said they would look into how it affected one vessel and not other nearby vessels, according to a translation of the conference.

Rollo Igno also described the “beautiful memory of the soul” in Mr. Lynch’s daughter, Hannah.

Mr. Igno said he had the “privilege” of spending “almost every waking moment” with Mr. Lynch while he was in custody in San Francisco, describing the details as unlike anything he had ever worked on and as “life-changing.”

“As an executive protection agent, the first rule is simple: Never get close to the boss,” he said.

“They are not your friends, they are clients and the relationship is strictly professional. But with Mike, that was not acceptable to him and to me, and that rule quickly faded.”

Autonomy, the software company sold by Mike Lynch in an £8.64bn deal in 2011, pioneered business data analytics, using machine learning and what Mr Lynch called “adaptive pattern recognition”.

The company used a statistical method called Bayesian inference at the heart of its software, which was invented by the 18th-century mathematician Thomas Bayes.
